Peter Richard Tombling ( Coll , 46-52 ; Co Ro , 57-98 ); died 15.1.2021 . Aulae Prae 1951-2 , School Exhibitioner , Sen Duncan Prize , VI 1951 ( Capt ). KRRC 1952-4 . Scholar Trinity College , Cambridge 1954-7 , 1 Maths , BA 1956 ; LRAM , top student of his year . Assistant master 1957-98 : Mathmā Don , authority on Winchester Football and a major figure in the musical life of Win Coll ; Housemaster ( C ) 1973-84 . On retirement , he continued to play an active part in the Winchester musical scene ; organist St Lawrence ’ s Church 2000- 14 . See appreciation above .
Mark Stansfield Stephenson ( Co Ro , 59-90 ; Fellow 92-96 ); died 21.1.2021 . Rugby School . National Service 1954- 56 . John Cosin Scholar , Peterhouse , Cambridge , 1 History Tripos , Pt 1 1958 , Pt 2 1959 , BA . Assistant Master 1959-1990 ; College Tutor 1963-7 ; Head of History 1965-70 and 1975- 90 . An inspirational and challenging teacher to a generation of historians . Retired to Broughton in Furness where with his own hand he planted and protected thousands of native saplings on the steep ground behind his house . See appreciation above .
David Huntingford Malan ( Coll , 35-40 ); died 14.10.2020 . Son of CHM ; English Essay , Hawkins Prize ( Engl Lit ) 1940 , School Exhibitioner . Balliol College Oxford 1940-4 , Frazer and Domus Scholarships , 1 Chem ,
BA 1944 , MA 1953 . Wartime research for SOE on time pencils used by the Resistance and on development of an incendiary bomb of which 1million were ordered . He trained at The London Hospital 1947 , Clinical Surgery prize 1949 ; BM , BCh 1951 , Dip Psychol Med1956 , DM 1962 , MRC Psych 1972 , FRC Psych 1973 ; Associate Member British Psychoanalytical Society 1955 ; consultant psychiatrist , Tavistock Clinic , London 1966 and developed Brief Psychotherapy Workshop 1967- 82 : his was ground-breaking work and he lectured widely , writing many books ; Career Achievement Award from IEDTA 2005 . A compassionate and highly perceptive therapist , David ’ s concern was to learn what really worked and to find the most effective way of helping patients : he made key discoveries that continue to influence training . ‘ I got my capacity for hard work and my intellectual interests from the enlightened atmosphere in College .’ He liked exploring remote places , especially in Scotland and New Zealand ; poetry and classical music ; and he was a keen Bridge player . He married ( 1 ) Muriel Janette Still in 1959 ( marriage dissolved 1982 ); ( 2 ) 1989 Jennifer Ann Stead , who survives him together with a son from the first marriage .
John Christopher Percy Boyes-Watson ( D , 37-42 ); died 14.12.2020 . Father of JPB-W , MAB-W and TCB-W ; Exhibitioner , Co Prae , English Essay Prize . Scholar Queen ’ s College , Oxford 1942 , 2 Chem ( distinction in Crystallography ) 1945 , BSc 1946 , MA 1952 ; OU Soccer 1942-4 , Lawn Tennis 1945 . Research chemist , Courtaulds 1946 , responsible for breakthroughs in processing the raw material for acetate ; commercial manager , Tricel fibre , 1957 : he oversaw the research , piloting plant production and the overall marketing operation for a new product and in 1964 a million Tricel ties were sold in a single year . Joint Managing Director , Foister Clay & Ward , 1964 ; director of various subsidiaries of Courtaulds 1967-87 . He was fortunate to join Courtaulds at a time when it was growing fast and innovating furiously , becoming one of the largest companies in the world : he also went on to be a leader in the field of investment appraisal . Throughout his life , John was deeply committed to playing his part in rebuilding Coventry , his home for 72 years . He married ( 1 ) Pamela Marian Abraham in 1957 who died in 1992 ; ( 2 ) 1998 Rosemary Humphrays in 1998 , who died in 2019 . He is survived by 3 sons from his first marriage .
Martin Alexander ( Tony ) de Meric ( C , 38-43 ); died 23.2.2021 . RN Special Entry 1943 ; East Indies and Pacific 1944-5 ; Sub-Lt ; Mediterranean 1946 ; Lt , Destroyer Gunnery Officer , Home Fleet , 1947 ; HMS Excellent 1949 ; Lt Cdr , retired 1961 : he was always proud to have served as a Royal Naval officer , as had most of the patriarchs in his family . HQ Standard Telephones & Cables , London 1961- 70 , export manager 1970 ; John Swire & Sons Ltd , Hong Kong and London 1970-84 . His hobbies included photography , a prolific garden , bird watching , travel and Naval lore , on which he was quite an authority . A disciplined man , quiet by nature but always ready to see the funny side in people : his sense of humour was a lifelong asset that served him well in almost every situation . He has been described as the consummate English gentleman , in his manner , his habits and in his dealings with those around
