Executive WH Smith & Son 1961-8 and then became a self-employed newsagent, setting up a chain of shops then bookshops and latterly upmarket stationers. Member Burford Town Council and a Samaritan. He loved fly fishing and travelling and owned National Hunt racehorses successfully, most notably Mr Cool, winner of 14 races and bred by his wife. A passionate supporter of the countryside and landowner, from the age of 13 he became a keen conservationist, restoring part of the River Windrush and planting many thousands of trees. He married Hon Susan Glyn in 1962, who survives him together with their 2 daughters.
George Miles Sarjeant Baylis( H, 50-55); died 25.5.2024. Lincoln College Oxford, 3 Hist 1960, MA 1963. 2 Lt RA 1955-7. CA 1963, FCA 1973. He lived and worked in Philadelphia in the late 1960s before returning to London. Member of London Stock Exchange 1971 and Partner in the firm Gilbert Elliott, specialising in gilts and debentures. His was one of the few small firms to survive the Stock Exchange’ s Big Bang in 1986, when it became part of Girozentrale, Vienna. Member of the London Stock Exchange pension fund committee. After retirement from the City in 1991, he divided his time between London and a second home in the South of France, along with many travels- mainly in Europe and South America. More recently, he spent much of his time visiting galleries. He married Ann Robson in 1964, who died in 2012, and is survived by a son and daughter.
