OWCCS News
OW Chapel Choir Soc gathered for our third Evensong in the medieval St Bartholomew the Great in the City of London on 27 th September. Rupert Gill( Q, 96-99) delighted and corralled us with his precise, but always kind and supportive, instruction, and the result was a moving and robust service of great depth. As is customary, we were led by our expert soprano guests. The music included Ayleward’ s Preces and Responses – among the most celebrated examples of Anglican choral music from the 17th century – and Stanford’ s rousing Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in C major, Op. 115, a cornerstone of our Anglican choral repertoire. The singing closed with Rheinberger’ s pensive Abendlied.
The Reverend Ben Cahill-Nicholls( E, 00-05) preached on human conflict, redemption and evangelism, as described by the parting of ways of Paul and Barnabas in Acts.
L-R: Harry Johnstone; Gerard Cloke Browne; Jacob Mallabone; Alex Hunter; Luke Mallabone; Chris Hunter, performing an unopposed hot( while armed)
It is safe to say that the Society, so expertly brought to life by Yang Wern Ooi( Coll, 81-85; CoRo, 01-03), has now fully matured. We do, of course, welcome new members who sang in Chapel Choir and even if you did not, you and your guests are very welcome at all our services and to join us for drinks and dinner afterwards. Please email the committee on owchapelchoirsoc @ gmail. com if you would like to find out more. Our next Evensong is in Chapel on Saturday, 16th May 2026.
OW Gatherings
Kenny’ s Reunion 1: Silver Jubilee, 5 th June.
12 Old Kennyites visited Win Coll on 5 th June, to mark 25 years since they had left.
This was a rare chance to see each other and to exaggerate our past athletic and artistic triumphs in a supportive environment. We were also grateful for the opportunity to tour the grounds, including the new sports centre and parts of the War Cloister where we were never trusted to go as boys.
The highlight of the visit was being joined by Dr Julian Havil( CoRo, 75-08; HoDo D, 90-98), the housemaster who recruited us all to Kenny’ s. Over lunch at the Hotel du Vin, JRH spoke powerfully of the values and community of the College, although he deftly declined one of his famed readings of The Conjuror’ s Revenge.
An afternoon tour of Kenny’ s confirmed that while much has changed some things, such as the mustiness of the boot room, are ever-present.
