Football news OWFC 150th Anniversary The Old Wykehamist Football Club is 150 years old this year. To mark the occasion, two OW teams visited Winchester on Sunday 5th October to take on Soccer XI and the 2nd XI. The Football Association has presented the OWFC with a plaque to mark their sesquicentennial and it will soon be displayed in Hunter Tent. The Maclure Pot was the prize at stake between Soccer XI and the OW 1st team. The second teams were playing for honour and the love of the game. Both matches were hard fought with some extra rivalry resulting from a strong turn out among the 2025 leavers. In the end the OWs proved just too strong for the home sides, and they retained Maclure Pot with a 2-1 victory.
Many thanks to Lekan Olagunju( F, 17-19) who organised the OW teams.
Sailing News Alastair Morley( B, 93-98), Commodore of WSC, writes:
Our 2025 Cowes rally started in Hamble Point Marina on Saturday 18 th May where seven yachts met up with six young Wykehamists from the school( four boys and two girls). This event started in 2009 and apart from the Covid years has taken place annually since then. The Old Wykehamists included Sophia Liu( H, 22-24) who was in the first intake of girls in 2023. The Wykehamist yacht owners were Richard Darley( K, 67-71), Alastair Morley, Graham Stott( G, 69-72), Ted Cadogan( F, 83- 88) and Hamish Macnamara( F, 86-91). We were joined also by Nick Nottingham( father of two Old Wykehamists with his son Jonty( I, 16-21)) and Charles Balmain( father of Rupert( K, 20- 25) and Henry( B, 22-)). Calum Sillars( A, 72-76) accompanied by Rupert Younger( F, 79-84) were our race officers.
A passage race across to Cowes was followed by drinks with Sir David( E, 62-67; Warden, 08-14) and Sally Clementi in their beautiful house in Cowes and dinner in The Royal Yacht Squadron. It was very pleasing that Noel Dobbs( D, 50-55), a long-standing member of WSC, was able to join us for dinner with his son Richard( D, 79-84). Dinner was followed by a Hot, won by Commoners and a rousing singing of Domum with Richard Cubitt( G, 08-13) on the piano. There was some racing off Cowes on the Sunday morning in very light airs. The event finished with a roast lunch.
The Cowes Rally dates for 2026 are 25 th & 26 th April.
Croquet News Hugh Pettingell( A, 96-01) represented Switzerland in the World Association Croquet finals, 17 th-26 th October.
OW Shooting Club
Jacob Mallabone( C, 15-20) writes about the recent revival of the OW Rifle Club at the 2025 Imperial Meeting:
For the first time since 2009, Winchester entered a team for the Schools Veterans Match, the official Target Rifle match for school alumni. Schools can enter any number of teams, each with five members. Each firer has ten shots to score up to 50 points and is aided by a“ wind coach”, another member of the team.
We entered one team and competed against nearly 50 other“ A teams”. Overall we scored 222 points( with 20 vs) out of a possible 250( and 50 vs) to place 38th, just missing our 2009 score of 223.21v that placed 39th. Our team consisted of: Alex Hunter( E, 82-87);
