Myth
Baby Boomers are selfish.
Reality
Following Traditionalists, Baby Boomers grew up being
promised the “American Dream,” and they pursue it.
Because of this, they’re often seen as being materialistic and
ambitious. Known as the “me” generation, Baby Boomers are
also stereotyped as selfish and uninterested in giving back.
And while they put energy toward self-actualization, to say they
don’t care about anyone but themselves is incorrect. In fact,
a study found that Baby Boomers are about to contribute an
estimated $8 trillion dollars’ worth of money and time to
charities and foundations in the next two decades.*
When it comes to giving in the workplace, they are at the
perfect age and point in their careers to act as mentors
and share advice with other generations.

Who They Are
Ambitious and goal-oriented, Baby Boomers are motivated
by professional development. Part of the generation following
World War II, they grew up in a society unprepared to
accommodate their large numbers, so they found schools
to be overcrowded and the job market to be competitive.
This competitiveness led them to compete for resources
and success.
How They Work
Baby Boomers are known for their dedication and
hard-working nature. Because they had to compete against
each other, they work long weeks in order to stand out
among the crowd and often define themselves based on
their professional accomplishments. With their identities
so wrapped up in their careers, they’re also known as the
“workaholic” generation.
What They Value
Baby Boomers value success and the status that comes
with monetary rewards. However, they also find personal
gratification through peer recognition and office perks that
signify seniority, such as a large office or an assigned parking
space. While they traditionally find worth in their work ethic,
the older Baby Boomers get, the more they look forward
to retirement.
How They Like to be Recognized
Workplace perks and acknowledgement of their expertise.
