The Negative Outcomes of Genetically Modified
Food on the Uninformed Public
ABSTRACT:
This study is based on how GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) affect the human body. The importance of this topic is to allow consumers to be more aware of what they put into their bodies. There are multiple studies on how GMO’s can cause health problems such as life altering diseases, effects on the immune system, and antibiotic resistance. Overall, since GMO’s are commonly used and can cause various issues there needs to be more awareness within society concerning this information.
INTRODUCTION:
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) affect the body more than just providing nutrition. GMO’s were first approved by the FDA in 1982 and appeared in grocery stores in 1994, but concerns about the effects of GMO’s only spiked recently as more and more people realized how poorly they affect the human body. GMO’s have many effects on our bodies such as antibiotic resistance, fatal diseases; they even affect how our immune system works. There are many more subjects that people hesitate to bring to the table when it comes to discussing GMO’s.
The awareness of fatal diseases is limited. These diseases include liver failure, urinary and bladder cancers, hypertension, thyroid diseases, stroke and obesity. These diseases are caused by an herbicide called glyphosate. This specific herbicide acts as an endocrine disruptor. Endocrine disruptors can alter hormones and cause imbalances and malfunctions in the endocrine system. Furthermore, the act of glyphosate can also effect organisms going through hormones such as fetuses, babies, children, adolescents and the elderly.
AIM:
Since research has shown that GMO’s have negative effects on human health, raising awareness can help reduce these effects.
METHOD:
This research is a literature review of the negative effects of human health when consuming GM foods. The community chosen for this topic is the United States.
Three peered reviewed journals were searched on the topic of GM foods effecting human health in the United States, using the PubMed database.
RESULTS:
In the article “Genetically Modified Foods and Health Concerns”, helped shine light on the unknowns of GMOs, specifically, the need for labeling so consumers are aware of what they are buying. In the article “GMO: Harmful Effects”, it outlines the chain of events from injecting the animals and plants with chemicals as it affects human health. In the article “GE Food Dangers: Why GMOs Can Never Be Safe”, the author discusses the long term affects of consuming GMO products.
