2020 Target
Focusing on Waste Reduction
TRC is committed to minimizing our material inputs and maximizing recycling opportunities associated with our operational footprint and service delivery, and we have established a focus team of volunteers to advance this goal.
In FY16, we had a target to reduce copier paper usage by 20 percent, normalized to Net Service Revenue, by 2020. We worked with our vendor to track paper purchased at individual offices as a proxy for paper usage. We encouraged double-sided default printer settings as well as consistent practices such as electronic invoicing, electronic employee offer letters, and electronic client deliverables. Increased awareness changed behaviors and reduced paper usage by 19 percent in FY16.
Because of the success of our paper usage target in FY16, we initiated a new 2020 target to ensure recycling programs were implemented in all offices located in communities with recycling options. Currently, 95 percent of our offices report recycling at least one waste stream, however we know that we have opportunities to increase recycling. Moving forward, we plan to continually improve the awareness of TRC’ s employees on the topic of recycling and to improve our recycling efforts by expanding waste streams our offices currently recycle, as well as further emphasize opportunities in sustainable purchasing and sustainable event planning.
Reporting Significant Spills Along with vehicles, our field projects often involve the use of portable equipment and chemical storage that could potentially impact the environment if a release were to occur. We recognize the threats that material spills can pose to communities and the environment, and we take steps to ensure that good management practices are employed to avoid these incidents. TRC had no significant spills in FY15 or FY16.
