Calculating Our GHG Emissions

Energy efficiency and fuel economy translate to reduced greenhouse gas( GHG) emissions. As we proactively manage our energy footprint, we have seen an overall reduction in emissions from our baseline in 2014.
In standard GHG reporting format, our emissions are broken out by Scopes 1, 2 and 3 and are reported as both absolute emissions reductions and emissions normalized to headcount.
Standard emission factors published by the EPA are used to calculate GHG emissions from these sources. The modification to the 2014 energy consumption calculation methodology changed the GHG emissions as well as energy consumption calculations for 2014.
Our absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction from FY14 to FY16 was 2 percent( 184 MT), which represents a 9 percent reduction when normalized to headcount.
In FY15 we also began to track Scope 3 GHG emissions from rental vehicles. We sourced emission data from our primary suppliers of rental vehicles, which comprise roughly 90 percent of the vehicles that TRC rents each year for business travel.
While we have not set a target for Scope 3 emissions due to fluctuations in business travel related to client needs, we continue to investigate methods for tracking and reducing Scope 3 emissions.

Emissions Scopes
> > Scope 1 emissions are those that result directly from an organization’ s operations, such as burning fossil fuels or, in TRC’ s case, company fleet vehicles and energy consumption from office locations under our operational control.
> > Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from a utility provider resulting from energy used by the organization, such as purchased electricity, steam or chilled water. This is the primary source of emissions for our office locations.
> > Scope 3 emissions are the result of other sources, indirectly related to an organization, such as employee commuting, contractors, and employee business travel other than our fleet vehicles.
