EGYPT: “Kol Sana We Enta Tayeb!”
In Egypt, Christmas is celebrated on January 7th. Meanwhile,
festive New Year activities take place in summer, around July
when high tides bring water and fertile alluvial to land. New
Year’s Eve here is not organized on any fixed date, but depends
on the Nile River’s tide.
Nowadays, although they can predict the Wepet Renet Day
- “The opening day of year” thanks to advanced technology,
Egyptians still wait for the first crescent moon. This signal
informs that the floating season has just started and people
begin celebrating New Year when they receive the official
statement from the main temple. At that time, Egyptians will
happily say “Kol Sana We Enta Tayeb!”
The New Year celebration in Egypt derives from a legend that
Apollo saved mankind by making the War God, Sekhmet,
drunk when she was planning to destroy humanity. Egyptians
express their gratitude by holding a festival that is full of music,
food, sweets and drinks. When travelling to Egypt these days,
you will see people giving each other talismans as a blessing
for the New Year. Making noise is the way locals enjoy festive
activities. The sounds of music, drums, trumpets and petards
help them to remove the devils of the old year and welcome
happiness in the new one.
If you visit Egypt on major holidays such as Christmas and
New Year, do not forget to try “Fattah” - a traditional cuisine
including rice, lamb with tomato sauce and hot crispy cakes
at the bottom. In particular, bread is considered a specialty of
Egypt with more than 15 different types. Sweet-lovers will be
enchanted by the paradise of delicious sweets such as Ghrayeba
(Egyptian butter cookies and fresh cream with Khoshaf). Do
not forget to buy traditional cakes for your children: young
equestrian shaped cakes for boys and cakes in the shape of a
girl wearing colorful costumes for girls.
