people in their community explore the relationship between drug use and sexual health. In your hands you have a training guide aimed to empower young people to play an active role in the education of other young people in similar situations, in order to prevent unintended or unwanted consequences of sexual activity and / or drug use.
Peer communication is direct and honest, effectively providing information to help young people prevent harms and diseases associated with drug use and unsafe sex.
The trainer who uses this guide should be a young person who facilitates a small group of 15 to 25 young people, in a space accessible to and considered safe by participants.
The training should be a forum for young people to speak their minds and voice their concerns, and should also be based in the following principles:
o Every person has an inalienable right to make informed choices about drug use and sexual activity through access to accurate education and information and supplies that support safety, such as healthy and safe contraception; o Individuals and the relationships they choose must be respected, ergo sexual health and the use of drugs must be addressed through a harm reduction framework; and o The promotion of sexual health and minimising of drug-related harm improves an individual’ s quality of life and helps the individual achieve health.
