Though you might not have seen them, the Senior Classical League was as omnipresent as ever at this year's virtual convention. The goal was not to give JCLers a consolation prize of a convention, but to take advantage of the unique opportunities of being online. We did this by creating new Ludi events, such as the trick shot competition, and including That's Entertainment! entries that could never otherwise be showcased during a live convention. Attendees who ordinarily are unable to attend NJCL conventions had the chance to experience the JCLove for themselves. Though this year's convention was certainly not what anyone expected, it will never be forgotten.
The SCL's point of pride this year is the uncovering of the greatest case of corruption imaginable—no, not that the delegates chosen to move to adjournment are chosen all willy-nilly, not even that the 'yays' and 'nays' mean nothing when voting to close GA—worse: that everything is cake. The virtual 2020 NJCL Convention saw two amendments to the NJCL Bylaws pass overwhelmingly. Amendment No. 1 increased the annual individual membership dues from $2.00 to $3.00. NJCL had experienced a shortfall in its budget for the past two years. The increase represents only a 50% increase, despite the fact the rate of inflation had increased the average cost over 63% since our last dues increase in 1996. In addition to inflation, NJCL had incurred higher office space expenses after 2014 when Miami University was no longer able to provide us office space at a reduced rate. Delegates agreed the increase was needed, and the amendment passed by a vote of 45 for and 0 against. Amendment No. 2 removed the last place in the Bylaws which used gender-specific pronouns and replaced them with a noun. The amendment passed by a vote of 44 for and 2 against.
