On the first evening of the National Junior Classical League’s virtual convention, 47 delegates gathered before their computers to participate in the Virtual Scavenger Hunt. Over the next hour, the 2019-2020 NJCL Officers led delegates in a race to collect 23 household items.
The first tier of items featured everything from shoes and toothbrushes to spoons (plural) and face masks. Upping the ante in the second round, JCLers sprinted around their homes, collecting houseplants, printed pictures, school t-shirts, kitchen pots and pans (featured, right), and sloganed coffee mugs. In this category, delegates proudly displayed the JCL version of their household items, including a 2011 JCL umbrella and a purple and gold kazoo from the 2019 NJCL Convention.
The final tier challenged delegates to uncover JCLer specific items: printed Latin/Greek homework, a Percy Jackson novel, JCL socks, an old nationals nametag, and a JCL drawstring bag.
With grand totals of 23 and 22 items, the top four participants were mailed their choice of either a stress column or a plush Pegasus.
Noah Abuhajir of the Wisconsin JCL recounts his experience: "The scavenger hunt was a blast. Honestly, running around the house trying to find the items was great, but seeing people scramble around was hilarious and just good fun all around.”
The camaraderie created by Latin-lovers hunting down houseplants and carrying kitchen pots establishes the feeling of community all seek during these times, the sense of community the JCL is built upon.
