We were very happy to have been able to have our convention in early March. Then, the newly- elected officer board got acquainted with their positions and duties during March through officer meetings. We launched a service project, held a photo contest, and released a spring Torch. In April,
we organized a March-Madness-style tournament bracket where we put our favorite JCL and classical topics and characters against each other. The winner was national convention. We also organized a statewide Zoom call to celebrate Rome’s birthday and National Classics Week.

Salvete Omnes!
Over the past few months, the VJCL has been hard at work with the intent of keeping our delegation connected through these trying times at the forefront of our minds. In the month of February (before lockdown orders officially hit the state of Virginia), a statewide Certamen was held at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. At this event, our Second Vice President Josh Liberman held a sock drive and got a number of donations! Another key event was our VJCL Spring Board Meeting, which took place virtually via zoom in late March. At this meeting, we got the idea for a VJCL vs. VSCL meme war, which is available for viewing through both the VJCL and VSCL Instagrams. The Spring 2020 VJCL Forum was published in mid April, and is available for viewing via the link in our Instagram post! Lastly, the VJCL made daily posts for National Classics Week, reorganized by VJCL First Vice President Jack Purple, detailing things delegates could do at home to keep the classics alive in modern times. This week ended with a Skype call hosted by VJCL President Savvy Thompson to celebrate Rome’s birthday!

For National Classics Week this year, we state officers of the Kentucky Junior Classical League decided to hold a new event: the Classical Classics Bracket. Based on a local delegation’s annual tradition, the bracket aimed to find what KYJCLers love most about this organization via daily Instagram polls. Beyond the first round, opposing topics didn't exactly make sense (e.g. Caesar vs Certamen), but like many things in the JCL, the chaos is what made it fun. Nationals swept through the bracket — an unsurprising but welcome result knowing how much we love our yearly meetup. Even if we will only
meet through this year's virtual convention, seeing JCL events like these continued online is infinitely reassuring.
