Salvete y’all!
Tennessee’s virtual state convention has been well underway here. We were lucky enough to move almost all of our contests online. Certamen and testing were both held over Google Forms, and candidates campaigned over Instagram this year. We also were able to move creative arts contests online with dramatic Latin, vocal performance, and English oratory occurring over YouTube and students submitting pictures of their graphic arts and documents of their writing online. We announced awards and elections over a livestream this year so that everyone can feel like they’re at General Assembly. Overall, state convention was a huge success. We all hoped to see everyone at NJCL this year, but if not we will be with JCLers all across the country in spirit. Overall, Tennessee has had a great year and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
Salvete!
I hope you all are having a fun, yet safe time at home! The WJCL wrapped up its state convention just in time at the end of January. This year we had a rocking “That’s Entertainment” alongside a massive 200- person Kahoot featuring classically-themed questions as well as some random topics. To end the fantastic weekend, the WJCL gathered for the infamous “Toga Dinner” the night before the last GA. The following morning, WJCLers enjoyed the new addition of officer makeovers before saying their goodbyes and parting with friends.
In February, Wisconsin sent two teams, one novice and one intermediate, to the annual Princeton Certamen tournament. Both teams were successful, the novice team taking second in the final round, and the intermediate team finishing strong in the semi-finals. Congrats to all the teams that competed at Princeton this February!
After electing a new board, the WJCL began planning for National Classics Week. This year we focused on online, at-home activities. For the first day, the WJCL took to freerice.com to donate grains of rice by answering fun trivia questions. We held a competition for the most grains, and the winner contributed over 3000 grains of rice! Day two was “Fun Fact Friday” where the WJCL officers shared fun classical facts and the delegates commented their fun facts on Instagram. The following day, our WJCL 2nd Vice President Camille Deslongchamps posted a DIY mask tutorial on Instagram, inspiring our delegation to stay safe and healthy by making masks for oneself and others. On day four, we celebrated Demeter, the goddess of the harvest and grain, by encouraging the delegates to have a bowl of cereal to celebrate. Furthermore, for day five, our WJCL Secretary Eddie Kustner hosted a meme contest on Instagram to share crazy classical jokes with the WJCL! Lastly, for Rome’s 2773rd birthday, the WJCL invited its delegates to bake a celebratory cake at home and then send photos of their creations to us to be featured in the Torch: WI!
Lastly, at the end of April, the WJCL released the Torch: WI Spring Edition including new officer updates, state convention testimonials, an amazing article by IJCL Editor Aidan Gregg (thank you!), and a special page dedicated to JCL Jokes.
In the end, the WJCL has been staying strong these past few months despite the recent switch online. We hosted our first online board meeting on Zoom in April and hope to continue similarly until we can once again reunite in person!
Stay healthy and I hope to see you all at this summer’s virtual convention!
