Torch: U.S. LXIX Summer 2020 | Page 18

At the beginning of March, the FJCL officers gathered together for their annual Spring Planning Meeting. We worked on judging all pre-convention contests, finalizing our agenda for states, and making our annual Classics Week video. We have also continued working on our other individual officer duties. Our Recording Secretary made fun infographics for Instagram; our Vice President created new spirit project ideas; our Parliamentarian drafted amendments to the FJCL Constitution and Bylaws; and our Historian judged our monthly Photo of the Month contests.

Unfortunately, due to the current circumstances, our state convention was canceled. However, this did not dissuade us from creating an FJCL Virtual Forum, where we facilitated everything from academic testing to Certamen on Discord to a trick shot Ludi contest. We also implemented a new election and amendment process. We were extremely excited to bring a sense of normalcy to the JCL, and we thank everyone who contributed, inside and outside of the state, to make this forum happen.

Florida also celebrated NCW during this time, with many of our members posting pictures of themselves eating cereal and making pancakes. Thank you to the NJCL officers for adapting the usual activities to an online format!

We hope that everyone in the NJCL is coping well with this unprecedented situation and is staying safe and healthy. Valete amici!

Like many other JCL chapters around the country, Georgia heartbreakingly canceled its state convention at the end of March. Months of planning went down the drain, and the officers scrambled to put together an online imitation of our annual festivities. I am proud to say that the state carried out elections with the same amount of enthusiasm and found countless strategies to reach people over social media. The inaugural meme contest was a huge success and brought some much needed lightheartedness to everyone’s lives.

As the weekend ended on a flood of virtual Latin activities, the board looked back on our year together. We are proud of the new board we elected and are confident they will do an amazing job next year leading the GJCL. Our JCL career may not have ended the way we thought it would, but we are proud of our accomplishments this year. Besides, virtual national convention is not so far away.

Salvete!

The IJCL has had a rough time dealing with quarantine, but we are still very optimistic. Because our state convention was canceled, we had to have two emergency board meetings to figure out what to do. This year we are publishing results for pre-convention contests on our social media (follow @indiana_jcl on Instagram) so our hardworking chapters can still get the recognition they deserve. We’ll miss seeing you all at nationals but we hope you’re keeping busy and staying healthy!
