Salvete amici!
We hope you’re all social distancing and staying healthy. Since Arizona was one of the first states to announce the closure of its schools for the rest of the school year, we were unable to have a physical state convention this year. Fortunately, our magistri were hard at work making sure we could transfer most of the contests online. From a formal Certamen tournament on Zoom to dozens of academic tests and even an impromptu art contest, this year's virtual convention tried to incorporate everything we would normally experience at state. In addition to our online state convention, we had a wonderful time participating in National Classics Week by doing some much-needed spring cleaning, at-home exercises, pancake-making, and of course Roman birthday cake-baking.
During this taxing and difficult time, we at AZJCL hope you keep this year's theme – "Omnes...summa ope niti decet, ne vitam silentio transeant" – in the back of your mind so that we can continue persevering and building up this amazing community of classics scholars together! We wish we could see you all at nationals, but we will be thinking of you this summer!
Salvete omnes!
What a crazy year it has been! Switching to online school and getting accustomed to quarantine life has been odd to say the least but if there’s one thing that has remained constant over the past few months, it’s the spirit of the CAJCL.
Unfortunately, we were not able to attend state convention at University High School in Irvine this year, but we have been working effortlessly to prepare for next year. This year was the first time we have ever held a virtual election and thanks to Ethan Yan, CAJCL Parliamentarian, we have successfully elected our next CAJCL State Board. Our new state officers are Ahna Kim and Sonia Agarwal of Menlo School (Convention Presidents), Ava Tynan of St. Ignatius College Prep (1st VP), Rupert Chen of The Harker School (2nd VP), Elizabeth Casey of Sage Hill (Parliamentarian), Chaerim Kim-Worthington of Harvard-Westlake (Secretary), Sadie Almgren of Menlo-Atherton (Historian), Cara Holden of Miramonte High School (Northern Rep.), Kabir Ramzan of The Harker School (Webmaster), and Kaleigh Ruegg of St. Ignatius of College Prep. (Nuntius Editor). Our 2020-2021 CAJCL State Board was inducted during our board meeting in mid-May.
Although COVID-19 has presented some setbacks, the positivity of the CAJCL binds us together from all our homes. We will miss seeing you in Virginia this summer but we are eagerly awaiting your arrival in San Diego for nationals 2021!
