Turning Operational Excellence into Industry Influence: Geopolitical crises rarely allow time to prepare. When tensions escalated in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this year, Celestyal managed two cruise ships, thousands of guests, and hundreds of crew members in an unpredictable environment.

Led by CEO Chris Theophilides and COO Captain George Koumpenas, the company prioritized safety by coordinating passenger disembarkation, supporting crews, and preparing both vessels for transit through one of the world’s most sensitive maritime corridors.

With senior management approval, Celestyal Discovery became the first cruise ship to safely depart the Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz, demonstrating that passage was possible under carefully managed conditions. Other cruise operators soon followed. The achievement attracted national media attention, shifting the focus from the crisis to Celestyal’s leadership, planning, and operational excellence.

The conversation continued after the ships returned. At Posidonia 2026 in Athens, industry leaders reflected on the implications for cruising.

<<< The 2026 Caribbean Travel Trends Report by Amadeus and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) confirms this trend, showing that arrivals from Latin America increased 24% year over year, compared with 1% overall growth for the Caribbean. It highlights Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia as priority source markets, reflecting their role in diversification, premium travel growth, and resilience during shoulder and low seasons.

From a connectivity perspective, Panama is a key gateway, channeling flows from markets such as Argentina and Chile into the Caribbean. Miami remains an important extraregional hub for Latin American travelers, while Barbados strengthens its role as a regional connector within the Eastern Caribbean. The outlook is clear: Latin America is evolving from an opportunistic source market into a structural growth pillar for the Caribbean, with connectivity, airlift and multi-destination development central to competitiveness.
