They are not something we do to make God love us . He loved us even when we were enemies ( Rom . 5:8- 10 ).
They are not ways we seek to establish our own righteousness before God . Righteousness is a gift given through faith . Yet intentional efforts to grow our relationship with God and others is necessary to our formation in grace and maturing in walking out the righteousness freely given ( 2 Pet . 1:3-11 ; Rom . 3-8 ).
They are not joy-killers . Spiritual Disciplines are relational ways we interact with the source of life and joy and grow in a life of face-to-face relationship in the joyful presence of the LORD ( Ps . 16:11 ; 1 Thess . 5:16-18 ; Jn . 16:24 ).
