Your body has the capability to purge lots of things everyday through the skin,
blood, urine and solid waste, but if you eat like most Californians, you have
access to some of the best produce in the U.S.
Even still, our bodies are breaking down. According to the American Cancer
Society’s 2013 Cancer Facts & Figures, the Bay Area (which includes Alameda,
San Francisco and Marin Counties) expected 11,490 new cancer cases. To put
that into perspective, Los Angeles had the most expected cancer cases as a
single county. To boot, cancer happened to be the second leading cause of
death in California in 2009. And that’s just one disease. Never mind diabetes,
heart disease, autoimmune diseases and so on.
If we can agree that there is some level of measurable “non-biological” toxicity
that gets into the body from everyday living, the question then becomes…
2. What have I got to lose?
The jury’s still out on whether juice
cleansing can help your body detoxify
anything, scientifically speaking. You
might lose a few pounds on a juice
cleanse, but you’ll be lucky if you find
anything on the internet about the
efficacy of juicing backed by science.
However we know that both fruits and
vegetables are packed with vitamins
and minerals, proteins, carbohydrates,
simple sugars, fiber and beneficial
enzymes. But it’s not the vegetables
and fruits in the juice doing the work; it’s the vitamins and minerals IN the juice
that do the heavy lifting.
History has shown causal relationships between specific vitamin and mineral
deficiencies including the correlation between Scurvy and Vitamin C and
studies have shown the correlation between Iron, Magnesium and Niacin and
Spina Bifida. In recent times, there have been studies on the correlation
between mineral deficiencies and acute disease.
