Tees firm rises to recycling challenge TRAILBLAZERS

Hard at work – inside the Titan Trailers site.

As part of the government’ s circular economy strategy, measures from the“ Simpler Recycling” policy are starting to be implemented.

From March 31, 2025, businesses and non-domestic premises have been required to separate non-recyclables, food waste, paper and card and other dry recyclables. Household collections will be included from March 31 this year, while currently exempt premises must comply by the end of March 2027.
Titan Trailers, based in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, has responded to the new legislation with a fully leakproof food waste trailer – thought to be the first of its kind in the UK.
To mark the launch, Titan held a competition with St Margaret Clitherow ' s Primary School, in South Bank, Middlesbrough, inviting pupils to design the trailer’ s livery and promote the importance of food waste recycling.
The winning designs from pupils in years three, five and six were used in a full wrap, and the children were invited to Titan’ s factory to see the finished trailer. The project also helped raise awareness of recycling within the local community.
The design uses a fully tanked, sealed aluminium floor, with the moving floor drive sitting above it, and rear doors fitted with locks that clamp tightly to prevent leakage.
The trailer features a Cargo Floor Speedster system from the Dutch moving floor specialist, which has already enjoyed success with leakproof systems in mainland Europe.
For operators, the leakproof variant offers the same core functionality and payload capacity as Titan’ s standard moving floor trailers, with the added assurance that the load will not contaminate the road. It is fitted with a remotely operated Dawbarn Hydroclear tarp roof and side-mounted door controls to keep the operator safely away from the rear door during operation.
While the leakproof model does not replace general waste specifications, its lightweight design is well-suited to food waste applications. Every Titan leakproof trailer for the UK and European market will be assembled and finished at the company’ s Middlesbrough factory, using kits supplied by its parent company in Canada.
Because production is localised, Titan can personalise trailers to suit customer requirements, including cameras, audible warnings, extra lighting, paint and decals, so each unit is ready for work from day one.
