NEWS WINNER Paul McGinley - the European Ryder Cup captain must have looked at the leaderboard at the conclusion of the Dubai World Championship and allowed himself a smile as he looks forward to Gleneagles. Stenson, Poulter, Rose, Westwood, Donald, McIlroy, McDowell and a couple of new kids on the block, Dubuisson and Luiten, all performed admirably. And when you throw in the likes of Garcia, Molinari, Fleetwood, Wood and Manassero, you can understand why McGinley has a nice warm feeling LOSER Paul Lawrie - barely 12 months ago, Lawrie was on the fringes of the top 30 in the world rankings, and was one of the stars of the European Ryder Cup team. What a difference a year makes. He is in now in 90th place in the rankings. The 1999 Open champion missed out on the Dubai World Championship after finishing the season in 63rd place on the money list. What’s more, he managed only one top 10 finish all year. Mr Grumpy was even grumpier than usual. WINNER Adam Scott - what can you say? One of golf’s good guys (although I can’t forgive him for that God-awful putter), there was scarcely a dry eye in the house when he won The Masters. Threw away The Open for the second year in succession, but then flew to Australia at the end of the season to support his home tour - his presence ensured huge crowds, and he couldn’t stop winning THEZONE / ISSUE 28 19
