Let’s try some others – So Yeon Ryu, Eun-Hee Ji, Jeong Jang. Give yourself a coconut and a gold star if you can put a face to any of the aforementioned major winners. Let’s get something straight - it is not the fault of these fine Asian golfers that they are so, well, inscrutible. That’s the way they have been brought up.But the LPGA Tour is in trouble, and it really needs a fresh American talent to drag it out of the doldrums. The number of tournaments is falling, and so is prizemoney. Thankfully, the Solheim Cup, at Colorado Golf Club, offered some respite. And for Laura Davies it also marked the end of an era. Exactly the sort of player the game needs a new, young version of, the English golfer played in the first match in 1990 and had been an ever-present in all 12 matches, including Europe’s victory at Killeen Castle in County Meath, Ireland, two years ago. She has played a crucial part in all four of Europe’s wins and was absolutely determined to make Lotte Neumann’s side this time around. She certainly played enough golf, and even gave herself some chances of qualification but, sadly, when she needed to produce her best golf she was unable to do so. She must now face up to the sad reality that, at the age of 49, her Solheim Cup future will be as a captain, not as a player. “She was disappointed,” said Neumann.
