HUGE ADVENTURE FOR SOLO TRANS TASMAN YACHT CHALLENGE SPONSORS
Ray White New Plymouth principals Carey and Jane Simonson jumped at the opportunity to be the naming rights sponsors of the Solo Trans Tasman Yacht Challenge , and what followed was quite the adventure .
The yacht race started in New Plymouth where Jane was in charge of sounding the starting hooter , then sailors traversed the seas all the way
to Southport on Queensland ’ s Gold Coast .
Jane and Carey flew to the Gold Coast to meet the winner , 76-year-old Malcolm Dickson in Sarau who completed the race in 10 days , 1 hour , 50 minutes and 53 seconds . Malcolm ’ s wife , daughter , and granddaughter were also waiting at the finish line with them .
“ My previous career was in offshore surveying , so I have spent lots of time at sea working in boats and ships of varying sizes from 20m to 120m ,” Carey said .
“ I have been in 15 metre seas in 50m vessels , and if they were willing to sail across the Tasman in 10m to 17m yachts in seas that can get that big or bigger they deserve sponsorship .
“ It was a very humbling experience .
“ The best and most rewarding part of the sponsorship for me was being there at the finish line and watching each yacht cross the line to the hooter we sounded and seeing them safely into port .”
