AMS Spelling Bee Champion
Selected
Arlington
Middle
School held its Spelling
Bee on Friday, November
1.
Forty-eight students,
chosen in classroom bees,
participated.
Mary
Dunlap, a retired AMS
teacher,
was
the
pronouncer.
AMS
teachers served as judges.
The top speller was
sixth grader Gabriel
Carson with Zachary
Perry, seventh grader, as
runner-up. Both students
received trophies. Gabriel
will advance to the Shelby
County Spelling Bee,
sponsored
by
the
Commercial Appeal, in
February. The Spelling
Bee is sponsored at AMS
by the National Junior
Honor Society and is part
of the Scripps National
Spelling Bee.

AMS Student Receives State Recognition

A bookmark drawn
by Chelsea Hodgson has
been
selected
as
Honorable
Mention,
Middle School Division
in the first inaugural
bookmark
contest
sponsored
by
the
Tennessee Association of
School
Librarians
(TASL). Students from
around the state were
invited to participate in
Chelsea
Hodgson
and Mrs. Haggard
the contest, which opened
in August 2013.
Entries were to be
hand drawn or digitally
created art illustrating the
theme “Picture This @
Your Library”. Contest
committee
chairperson
Paige Eisemann said the
committee was thrilled
with the number of
applicants received for
this first year of the
contest. “It has been so
exciting to see what our
students really see in our
libraries.
