He was passionate about the garden at his fantastic Sussex home and swept the board with his prize-winning vegetables every year at the village show . He founded the Friends of Harting to support the church in South Harting and was generally active in the community . A keen yachtsman and skier into his 80s and a member of MCC : he loved watching cricket at Lord ’ s ( and anywhere else ). He also delighted in listening to and performing choral music . Latin Speaking , English Verse , Duncan Reading Prize ; 2 / Lt City of London Regiment 1952 , serving in Korea as platoon commander to Michael Caine who was to base the portrayal of Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead on him in the film Zulu . Magdalen College Oxford 1953-5 ; scholarship to RADA . He went on to have an acting career in Repertory , TV and film , including An Enemy of the State , The Onedin Line , Dad ’ s Army , The Avengers and Legacy of Murder . A huge supporter of Equity and served on Council ; a passionate and articulate advocate for performers around the world ; founder member of The International Committee for Artists Freedom : his work really took off in 1974- 75 , after the coup in Chile and the death of President Salvador Allende when so many actors were arrested , imprisoned , tortured and frequently disappeared . In 1999 , founded the International Performance Aid Trust , now called Safety Curtain . He trained as a celebrant with the British Humanist Association and was a stalwart of the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association . He was also a prison visitor , working with Lord Longford ’ s New Bridge Foundation . ‘ Bobby loved helping people . He was one of life ’ s givers .’ In 1961 he met his lifelong partner , John Page , who died in 2010 .
