Obituary

Horace Basil Barlow ( I , 35-39 ); died 5.7.2020 . Brother of TEB . Exhibitioner Trinity College Cambridge 1940 , Scholar 1942 , 1 Nat Sci 1943 ; Rockefeller Medical Studentship , MD Harvard 1944-6 ; MB , BChir , MA 1947 ; ScD ( Cantab ); Prize Fellow of Trinity College 1950-4 ; King ’ s College 1954-64 ; Professor of Physiological Optics and Physiology , Berkeley , California , 1963-73 ; FRS 1968 ; Fellowship , Trinity College 1972 ; Royal Society Research Fellow , Cambridge , 1973-87 ; Royal Medal ; Australia Prize ; received Ad Portas in absentia 2011 . Antony ( Toddy ) Hanbury ( K , 36-40 ); died 12.4.2020 . Brother of PH . Lords , Soccer XI , VIII , a remarkable all-rounder ; RAFVR 1940 ; trained in Rhodesia and served in Syria , W Desert and Italy 1942-5 ; F / Lt 1944 ; wounded . Joined De Beers in South Africa , then ED Sassoon Banking Co ( SA ); and , finally , Singer and Friedlander in London , where he worked alongside the young George Soros . He maintained a great interest in all that was happening at La Mortola , the Hanbury Gardens in Italy , and was proud of his family ’ s contribution to botany and horticulture there . He opened the new student accommodation at Wisley , Hanbury Court , in 2006 : his grandfather had gifted the land at Wisley to the RHS , about which the family are very proud . An excellent golfer ( captain of Sunningdale 1981 and a member for 56 years ); a keen bridge player and enthusiastic at jigsaw puzzles . Married ( 1 ) Elizabeth Leatham in 1947 ; ( 2 ) Diana Elizabeth Cunliffe-Owen in 1967 ; ( 3 ) Maryann Parker Bowles in 1999 , who survives him together with two daughters and a son from his first marriage , plus three stepsons and two stepdaughters .
Morris Hensman ( Bob ) Heycock ( H , 42-46 ); died 27.8.2020 . Brother of CWH and EAH , Co Prae . RNVR 1947-9 ; King ’ s College Cambridge 1949 , Winner Cambridge University Clinker IV 1950 and also gained four ‘ oars ’; Winner Barcroft Prize 1951 ; 2 Nat Sci 1952 . St Thomas ’ Hospital 1952-53 , 1st VIII , MB , BChir 1955 ; MA 1957 . He held a number of surgical appointments 1956-71 ; Johnson Fellow in Plastic Surgery , University of Miami 1969 ; FRCS 1971 ; Consultant Plastic Surgeon , Hull 1971-89 , where he developed a very successful department : his chief interests were in plastic surgery for children and following industrial accidents . Surgeon Commander RNR 1961-81 ; RD 1976 : he spent at least two weeks each summer serving on Naval ships . In London , he sang tenor with the Royal Choral Society under Sir Malcolm Sargent . He was a keen silversmith and Liveryman of the Goldsmiths Company , registering his own hallmark ( MHH ): his grandfather , Charles Heycock FRS , had been a famous chemist and metallurgist . He retired to Newton Ferrers and created a lovely garden and was also a keen sailor : his ashes were scattered by a small flotilla of yachts and dinghies in the Yealm estuary .
Robert ( Bobby ) John Woodward ( B , 43-47 ); died 18.6.2020 . VI 1946-7 ; 2 Lt Life Guards 1948-9 . He then worked for British Celanese 1950 ; Courtaulds 1957 ; and , finally , Hoechst UK 1967 as promotions manager in the fibres department ; marketing manager 1978- 88 . He retired at 60 and launched himself into charity work : he was a volunteer with St . John ’ s Hospice ; Burgh House in Hampstead ; and at the Starlight Children ’ s Foundation . He started a bursary to help fashion students at Central St Martin ’ s and became a volunteer at the Royal Opera House , continuing to be a Friend and frequently attending performances , latterly in his wheelchair . He was a member of the MCC for many years and an ardent Arsenal supporter all his life . He loved dogs and adored going to a remote cottage in Wales , where he walked and listened to opera . A kind , generous and amusing man who loved the good life . Married Sally Pillar in 1971 , marriage dissolved 1978 .
Roger Martin Button ( F , 44-49 ); died 14.6.2020 . Brother of JMB . Co Prae , VI ; secretary , Sailing Club ; Royal Engineers 1949 , 2 Lt 1950 ; Pembroke College Cambridge 1951 , 2 Arch , BA 1954 , MA 1956 , ARIBA 1958 ; CU Sailing , half-blue 1953- 4 . Assistant architect to Sir Basil Spence 1955-62 and senior assistant during reconstruction of Coventry Cathedral and seven other churches . His contribution was described by colleagues as diligent , painstaking , loyal and ever-faithful to the spirit of the concept . Partner , Adie , Button & Partners , the family business , from 1962 and of Waterhouse & Ripley from 1968 ; retired 1991 . He
