Singers: loved all forms of classical
and choral music, but also made
recordings with Pink Floyd and Frank
Zappa. Married 1973 Elizabeth Gale,

singular man, courageous in battling
the ill health that he suffered for so
long.

life character and a polymath: always
with a book in hand, he imparted
his infectious enthusiasm for culture,
cricket, the Suffolk countryside, Italy
and Italian wine. Married 1966 Sarah

Richard Andrew Maxwell-Hyslop
(I, 58-63); died 29.7.2019. Son of
ARMM-H; Bramston Prize; New
College 1963-6, Eng Lang and Lit,
BA; Royal College of Art, where
he was amongst the first Film and
TV students, 1966-7; freelance TV
director and scriptwriter for many
production organisations including
BBC TV, US Public Broadcasting
System, and independent companies
in London. He directed the BBC
Chronicle documentary on Rennes le
Château, which sparked wide interest
in the Templars and Poussin; other
films included Beryl Markham’s life
and the making of Kent’s architecture:
his cultural and general knowledge,
unassuming, seemed encyclopaedic.
He also took a keen interest in UK
and European current affairs, together
with Indian politics. Fly-fishing had
been a precious hobby until, in later
life, he suffered a major stroke. He
resolved all adverse events with
characteristic courage, honesty, never
complaining: for several years, he was
called by the Integrated Neurological
Service to talk about his experience.

and moved to France in 1975 to
form Capital & Continental and
was hugely successful building large
modern office blocks around Paris.
Returned to farm family estate in
Surrey 1995. A true Francophile and
bon viveur, a fine shot, golfer and
a reasonably successful race-horse
owner: as an alternative career, he
would have loved to have been a
bookmaker. Married 1972 Denise
Lamond, who survives him together
with their 3 daughters and a son.
