Before going to university he went on a gap year travelling in a VW Beetle across South Africa, selling personalised biros to local businesses. Selwyn College, Cambridge 3rd Class Honours 1982. He then decided to join the Army. He joined the Brigade Squad at Pirbright where the physicaltraining instructor shouted out,‘ Rham, what are those two bits of string hanging down from your shorts?’‘ My legs, Corporal’‘ Well, kindly move them a bit faster.’ He went to RMAS but never passed out. He first worked as a banker with Daiwa Securities and then with Infrastructure Capital Partners, where he focused on providing infrastructure finance, concentrating on central and eastern Europe. He worked on motorway projects in Croatia and Poland, latterly with the A4 Krakow to Katowice motorway. Challenging the claims of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was his personal crusade. The last ten years were hard for him: his mother, father and brother all died within a relatively short period, and his sister was institutionalised in Australia with terminal Alzheimers. However, he joined a party of friends in a tour of Slovenia, on which he looked happy and surprisingly fit for someone who was to have a major heart attack a few weeks later. He was summed up by a cousin:‘ He kept all but a select few at a distance, and had no idea of how much he was loved and valued’. He never married.

He was a keen skier and completed the Five Valleys Challenge in 2009 at Meribel. He was professional and courteous – a pleasure to work with and against. It is a rare thing for opposing lawyers got together after a case to have a beer – but that was Edward. He is survived by Jacqueline( née Russell), whom he had married in Chapel on 18 August 2015.
James Hairstens McGowan( C, 95-00): died suddenly and tragically 15.12.2015. Cross Country, a member of the victorious team that won the Knole Run; Athletics and Swimming, he will be remembered for dunking Prince William in the match against Eton. Born in Australia, he moved to Germany and coped admirably with the hard life in the years leading to Winchester. He was an invaluable member of the CRTM team from both a business and a social perspective. He passed the Chartered Financial Analyst Exam in 2015, the most respected investment management designation in the world. As a sporting all-rounder he naturally took up the Triathalon, competing in three in his last year, and despite not being a member of Soccer XI or Lords he played for OWFC and OWCC. The Cricketer Cup captain remembers him hitting the first ball for six. An outgoing young man living for the moment. He wrote in his University application statement,‘ I enjoy leading life to the full’ but that does not reveal just how much he enabled others to get the most out of life. He is survived by a brother and a sister.
