He joined St George’s Hill Golf Club 1972
and was elected Captain in 1997. Won the
Sir Philip Richardson Cup 1999. He played
his last game of golf in May 2015: though
seriously unwell he completed nine holes
for the Captains v The Rest, still carrying
his own clubs. In 1977 he joined the Forty
Club Golfing Society and by the 1990s he
was combining the roles of Secretary,
Treasurer and Fixture Secretary. Captain of
the Society in 1994/95. He finally stood
down in 2014 when he became the first
Honorary Life President. Max was a man in
a million, willingly undertaking huge levels
of work in order that others might enjoy
their sport. Survived by Pauline, his wife of
50 years, and their son and daughter; a
daughter predeceased him.
James Anthony Vaughan Dobbs (D, 51-56):
died 4.9.2015. Brother of RND (D, 50-55).
Sailing Club President 1956. Winner of
Public Schools Sailing Competition 1955.
ACA 1962. He worked as a Chartered
Accountant in London, Geneva, Trinidad
and Bahamas. British-American Insurance
Co, Nassau 1975-82. Sailing was his life: he
first crossed the Atlantic single-handed in a
24ft yacht in 1964. He built a Rival 41 in
1982 and made 34 trans-Atlantic crossings,
nearly always only two up. He then bought
an Olson 30, which he raced successfully
across the Caribbean. He won the CSA
Travellers Trophy so many times that he was
ruled ineligible to win it again. He was
married for a year in the 1980s. In 2013 he
bought a house in Majorca with his devoted
partner, Nicola Pears, who survives him.
Guy Peter Lawrence (I, 52-57): died
2.2.2016. He first worked for Hong Kong
& Shanghai Bank. National Service,
Royal Artillery. Commissioned and served
in BAOR. He returned to banking but
decided that he wished to stay in the
Army. He received a Regular Commission
and served with the Royal Artillery, first
with 29 Commando Regiment and was
proud to wear the green beret. He later
served in BAOR and Aden before serving
with 4th Canadian Royal Horse Artillery,
Ontario. Following Staff College he served
as MA to Chief of Staff, Northern Army

Group 1974-75. He then served as
Military Governor of the Maze Prison in
Northern Ireland. Promoted Lieutenant
Colonel and appointed commanding
officer Junior Leaders Regiment,
Bramcote. Whilst there he was asked to
take the Farewell Parade for the Master
Gunner, General Sir Harry Tuzo. He had
never ridden before and was trained by the
King’s Troop for three months before the
parade. Finally he served on the UK
Delegation to NATO, as SBLO I (NL)
Corps and in the MOD. Retired, 1991. He
then served as a Retired Officer 19922004. On retirement he worked for the
ABF, as treasurer Wiltshire Fight for Sight
and as membership secretary for Salisbury
NADFAS. He is survived by Dilys, his
wife of 51 years, and their two sons.
Nicholas Arthur Hugh Wright (G, 53-58)
died 31.8.2015. Brother of JMW (A, 5055). Sen Co Prae, Duberley Prize, VI.
McGill University BA Business. For many
years he worked abroad. International Aid
Programme to Algeria 1963. Reckitt and
Colman Overseas Ltd 1964; Fisons
Overseas Ltd 1967; Rank Hovis McDougall
Overseas Ltd 1970. International Distillers
and Vintners (Watney) 1972. He then
established his own company – Corico
International (specialist exporter to Japan)
1983. Married 1969 Jane Cooper, who
survives him.
