Rifle Brigade 1955-7, Malaya; capt, Singapore Army cricket XI 1957. Mather & Platt Ltd, engineers, Manchester 1958-63; director, Engelmann & Buckham 1966-78. He founded Mallett Machinery 1982; Ink Jet & Printing Supplies 2006; Officer, Association of Printing Machinery Importers 1986-2010. He married Susan Whitworth in 1961, who died in 2012, and is survived by their 2 daughters, a son predeceased.

Scholar New College Oxford 1957-61, 2 Jur 1960, Senior Scholar 1960-1; 2 BCL 1961. Middle Temple, Harmsworth Entrance Exhibitioner 1958 and Scholar 1962, Blackstone Pupillage Prize 1962. Barrister 1962; QC 1983. Recorder 1985, Master of the Bench, Middle Temple 1991; Head of Chambers at Hardwicke Building 1991-2000; member of Bar Council 1994-6; Deputy High Court Judge 1993-2003; Member of the International Panel for Alternative Dispute Resolution from 2000-08; Member of 15 NBS Chambers 2000-08. Retired 2011. He frequently volunteered at St Paul’ s Church in Clapham and he loved reading novels, the theatre and music, especially lieder and opera. He married Peggy Woodford in 1967, who survives him together with their 3 daughters.
Andrew Lionel Hichens( H, 50-54); died 5.1.2026. Son of WLH; brother of JH and MLH. Co Prae, Head of House, Lords 1952-4, Paget Bat 1952. Trinity College Oxford, 3 Lit Hum 1958; performed with OUDS. 3 games for Oxford University, Oxfordshire County Cricket Cup 1957: he played 37 matches for Oxfordshire from 1957-1964 taking 134 wickets. A genuinely quick bowler who could prove particularly difficult to handle in the days of uncovered wickets and no helmets. Member of Authentic and Harlequin Clubs. In 1959 he started farming at Langford in Gloucestershire. For 20 years he was a useful baritone in the Philharmonia Chorus of London and was a trustee of the Bampton Classical Opera for 6 years. He married Anne Goch in 1968, who survives him together with their 2 sons, one son predeceased.
David Richard McCarthy( I, 50-55); died 3.12.2025. Brother of NFMcC and RHGMcC, father of RGMcC. Lords 1954-5( capt), VI and Soccer XI 1955. SUO Eaton Hall OCS 1956, 2nd Lt, KRRC 1956-7. Exhibitioner Magdalen College Oxford, 2 Mod Hist. Unilever plc 1961-1995; marketing manager Gibbs Proprietaries Ltd; chairman Lever Bros Malaysia 1980, Lever Chile 1986, Marine Harvest International 1989. He retired to Scotland and became an avid supporter of Scottish Independence, standing twice as an SNP candidate. He loved horses, playing polo in Malaysia, show jumping in Chile and hunting in Scotland until well into his 70s. A member of the MCC and also followed football and racing closely. He married Fiona Balfour in 1965, who survives him together with their son and 2 daughters.
James William Stuart Macdonald of Glenmore( G, 50-55); died 6.2.2026. Son of SHM; brother of HJM; father of SHJM, PJSM, TWMM and MJEM; uncle of the Obituarist. Bisley; founder, Madrigal Society; the first boy at the school to play the saxophone:“ considered not a proper instrument at all, noisy sort of thing”; founding member of The Skyskrapers Dance Band. Ox & Bucks LI 1955-7, 2 Lt, Cyprus. Pembroke College Cambridge 1957, 2( ii) Cl 1960; cox in Goldie Boat and in CU Rowing VIII which toured South Africa 1959; member of the Hawks Club. Price Waterhouse & Co, London 1960-72; ACA 1964; PW & Co, Detroit, USA 1966-7; FCA 1974. CT Bowring & Co Ltd, London 1972- 82, finance director 1980; vice president Finance Marsh & McLennan Cos Inc, New York 1983-4; Oxford Agency Holdings Ltd 1987 and then director of a number of insurance companies at Lloyds. An active member of the local wind band, he loved his annual visits to the Wexford Opera Festival as well as shooting and fishing in Scotland. He will be remembered by many as an enthusiastic composer of doggerel verse. He married Ann Carmichael in 1969, who survives him together with their 4 sons.
