EVOLUTION
Ten years ago, the definition of addiction was
different to present day. The Diagnostic Manual
of Mental Disorders (DSM). DSM-IV’s definition
stated addiction is “a presence of physical
withdrawal symptoms” (American Psychiatric
Association, 2000). However upon revision,

DSM V’s definition of addiction was appended
to “encompass all acts of addiction including
behavioural and not just substance” (American
Psychiatric Association, 2013).
