Nurturing Music Leaders : THE MASTER OF MUSIC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
In today ’ s dynamic musical landscape , mastery of craft is just the beginning . The COVID-19 pandemic and evolving arts scene have emphasised the need for a broader skill set among musicians . Recognising this shift , Jonathan Ngeow , a musician with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra , embraced the Master of Music Leadership ( MMusL ) program at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music ( YST Conservatory ). His goal was too enrich the Chinese music scene in Singapore and broaden his own horizons .
Prof Peter Tornquist , Dean of YST Conservatory , highlights the importance of versatility in today ’ s professionals . Musicians must now be entrepreneurial , tech-savvy , and adept at interdisciplinary collaboration . They should not only adapt to change but also lead it .
Yeo Jie Yuan , a band director and Executive Council member of the Band Directors ’ Association ( Singapore ), underscores how the program has honed his strategic thinking . His vision is to build inclusive communities through music , a purpose that resonates from his own transformative experiences in a wind band . The MMusL , initiated in late 2021 , caters to music professionals
aspiring to shape the industry . The curriculum spans leadership , business , research , pedagogy , and contextual studies . Flexibility allows full-time or part-time engagement , and credits from prior continuing education modules at the Conservatory count toward MMusL completion . The program welcomes both local and international applicants . Assoc Prof Chan Tze Law , Vice Dean at YST Conservatory , emphasises that the MMusL is not only about coursework , but a mindset of continuous growth fostered within a supportive community . Students , already seasoned professionals , gain space for reflection , tools for refining their ideas , and support in realising their vision .
Damien Lim , a handbell conductor , educator , and director of the Ministry of Bellz , echoes
this sentiment . Despite being in the early stages of his MMusL journey , he ’ s already acquired valuable frameworks to enhance his role as an educator and director . His aspiration is to grow as a leader and nurture the next generation of music professionals .
The MMusL program at YST Conservatory , with its focus on leadership , innovation , and adaptability , equips musicians to navigate the evolving musical landscape . Graduates emerge with a versatility that empowers them to excel in their current roles and future careers . Matriculation occurs twice a year , in August and January . This program is a testament to YST Conservatory ’ s commitment to nurturing leaders who will drive positive change in the music industry , not just in Singapore , but on the global stage .
