As they stop drinking water, the green color (the chlorophyll) in the leaf or leaves breaks down. The green color disappears, and the yellow, orange, and red colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor. Actually, the leaves don't actually change colors they just lose their green color. WHY DO WE TELL JOKES ON HALLOWEEN?  by: Grace Rollo Everyone knows about the tradition of joke- telling on Halloween, but do you know how it got started?    Joke-telling on Halloween is not unique to St. Louis. Apparently, the tradition actually started in Des Moines, Iowa, where it began as a Depression-era attempt to curb some hooligan's antics, which included upending trash cans, turning on fire hydrants and shooting out street lights. It ran on the logic that if you distracted children with the task of coming up with a joke in exchange for their candy, they might decide not to smash the pumpkins on your porch.   This tradition has been long-standing, and it is likely to go on for much longer.
