The act of “Trick or Treat” started over 2000 years ago in ancient
Ireland with the Celtics. They would ask for fruits, nuts, or coins.
The Irish brought this custom with them to the United States when they fled
Ireland during the 1840’s potato famine. Our “Trick or Treat” term used to
be called “Guising”.
During WW2, children were not allowed to “Trick or Treat” because of
the sugar ration.
Back in the olden days, Trick or Treaters collected food and now we
collect candy.
The term “Trick or Treat” was first used in a Peanuts comic strip in 1951.
In 1952, Disney produced a comic strip featuring Donald Duck with
Huey, Dewey, and Louie “Trick or Treating”.
