SPORT // GIRLS ’ TENNIS
U15 VI
It has been wonderful to see players back out on the tennis courts this term , and the U15 girls have done us proud with both their commitment and performances throughout the season .
The first Saturday at the end of May , saw us face our local and long-standing opponents , Hymers . Despite some superb individual and team performances from the girls , we narrowly lost 5-4 . The time away from the court , due to the pandemic , meant that we had some work to do on remembering how to finalise points and games , which we had worked so hard for in the rallies . The following week saw us face a formidable team from Scarborough College ( we lost 0-9 ) who certainly gave us a lesson in attacking and aggressive play ; however , we then took the lessons learned here with us when we faced Queen Margaret ’ s . We played with spirit and determination against Queen Margaret ’ s , to come away with a closer , but frustrating , 5-4 loss .
The St Peter ’ s tournament was a real highlight ; the girls played some outstanding competitive tennis against some of our local opponents , including Bradford and , of course , St Peter ’ s . The girls ’ resilience was put to the test as they ‘ ran off ’ and powered through injuries throughout the day , to play some skilled and enjoyable tennis .
Special thanks to Ruby Watson for playing year above her U14 status , offering great strength to our first pair and always a smile on court . Amy Blight and Belle Yeomans are super young players who played consistently well throughout the season . It was great to see Honey Roe back on court after her time off due to injury , her presence bolstered the squad no-end . Daisy Luckett and Caitlin Marshall were a dependable and skilful partnership , who were a pleasure to watch . Evie Rennison and Lucy Grewer brought a calm and controlled partnership to the squad , and Annie Pearson ’ s cheer and energy was infectious throughout the squad and her contributions at the net were impressive .
In summary , a great season with a super squad of young ladies . They were a pleasure to coach and to be in the company of . I wish them all the best as they enter the Senior squads next year .
