BOYS ’ CRICKET
1st XI
P12 / W5 / D1 / L6
During this season , the boys have played 12 games ; they have won five , drawn one and lost six . There has been much quality on show , notably the win over a strong Scarborough College side , and a powerful performance against Hymers .
Henry Kay and Harry Jones are the only students to have produced centuries to date , 114 not out and 100 not out , respectively , and on several occasions both have received powerful support from Harry Jackson ; his most notable performance being 63 not out against Hymers , with 50 of those runs coming off only 15 deliveries .
The bowling has been led by Tom Kirby , Harry Holland , Harry Jackson and Henry Kay , with valuable support from Captain Ed Hasdell and Josh Matthews .
The champagne moment for the season was the outstanding one-handed catch taken by Brad Riley in an early season practice match , and this has been closely fought by the spiral-ling catch that Harry Jackson took in the recent defeat against Scarborough College !
The team has been well led by Ed Hasdell , and he deserves great credit for introducing young players of the future into the side in readiness for the 2022 season , notably Ollie Rook .
Full Colours awarded : Ed Hasdell and Henry Kay
Half Colours awarded : Ollie Kettle , Josh Matthews , Tom Kirby , Harry Jackson , Harry Holland , Harry Jones
Pocklington 1st XI v OP / Pixie XI
/ MATCH DRAWN
Having started the day with sunshine and cloudless skies , to then end with thunder , lightning and heavy rain was a bitter disappointment to what had been an excellent day ’ s play .
Winning the toss , the school batted first , keen to lay a strong platform to declare upon . Harry Jones was the mainstay , with a wonderfully compiled century made from 171 balls , including 14 fours and a six , he received excellent support from Ollie Rook with 41 of 31 balls . The school declared on 204 - 5 made from 58 overs .
Leaving the Pixies a maximum of 49 overs remaining , they made a steady start with openers Charlie Lambert and Will Watts seeing off the new ball pair of Kirby and Holland , before the introduction of Harry Jackson saw the demise of Charlie Lambert for 23 .
Will Watts and Ollie Rook played well ; scoring freely to set up the game for a grand finale , before the heavens opened to bring a close to the day ’ s play . The OP / Pixies were left on 141 - 1 , and Will Watts was stranded on 84 not out .
Quite fitting that this special day had started with celebrating memories of a great school and Pixie stalwart , Mr Malcolm Milne , for the opening of the new scoreboard , and for it to then witness another student century , was a great tribute to the man himself .
2nd XI
The second team have had a very positive season ; with fixtures limited through Covid and ‘ bubbles ’, the U16 XI have played with spirit and resilience , and have won three out of four matches , with much of their success coming from the consistency of their bowling . Due to bubbling and the restrictions on mixing , there has been a larger emphasis on the Fifth Form , with some fantastic debuts and first experiences for many . Coupled with a desire to win , they have come together as a unit and shown that they want it .
Highlights include a 28-run victory over Ampleforth , in which , after being bowled out for 71 , they returned the favour – bowling Ampleforth out for 43 , with Henry Rodmell taking 4 - 6 . Against Hymers there were batting highlights from both William Tucker- Lowe and William Grewer , and special mention must be given to Ben Burton who managed to take a wicket with his only ball in cricket at Pocklington School .
In the final match versus Hymers , 14-year-old Oliver Rook scored 60 not out on debut , and was aided by Ben Marson who took 3 - 5 . I look forward to seeing the progression of these players and wish them well as they move towards their senior years .
