BOYS ’ HOCKEY Review 2020-21

With the knowledge that there would be no fixtures due to the COVID crisis , you could well imagine students ’ attitudes to training and development would be at an all-time low , but how wrong you would have been ! To a student , every practice session , every after-school session , was keenly fought and well attended . Never once was a student absent in the knowledge that there were no external competitive fixtures to look forward to .
This all meant that House Hockey took on a new mantle in the year and , as expected , this was a fiercely competitive event amongst all the divisions .
Great credit must go to the Senior students , extremely well led by Lucas Bradshaw , who was instrumental in engineering this wonderful attitude amongst the entire hockey community . We are already looking forward to next season and COVID being a distant memory .

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

The Strength and Conditioning programme has continued to thrive in its fifth year at the school . The programme now supports over 140 pupils across 13 different sports , including sailing , dance , and modern pentathlon , as well as more traditional team sports such as netball , hockey , rugby , and cricket .
Throughout the lockdown periods , the engagement with home programmes was outstanding – the highlight being Miss Hird ’ s live sessions , which had fabulous attendance and commitment . There has also been more content available through the school ’ s Strength and Conditioning Instagram ( pockschool _ athleticdev ) and Twitter (@ PockAthleticDev ) accounts , to help ensure all pupils have ideas around their health and fitness .
It has also been wonderful to add the Second Form to the programme for the first time and to increase our provision with the new sports scholarships starting in the Third Form and Lower Sixth . The new Barbell Club , started by Miss Rees , has also been a hit with the Seniors !

ATHLETICS Review 2020-21

The 2021 season has been excellent and it has been brilliant to see the reintroduction of fixtures after missing last season . It has also been great to see so many students attending afterschool sessions , as well as games lessons , and continuing not just the success of athletics but the positive and inclusive culture that comes with it . This year , we have had team competitions against St Peter ’ s and Mount St Mary ’ s , all leading up to the annual Sports Day .
During the regular season , five school records were broken . Ethan Pym equalled the Fourth Form boys ’ 100m record , with a time of 11.60s , and also set a new long jump record of 5.94m . Emily Marshall has broken the Second Form girls ’ high jump record , with a jump of 1.50m – the highest jump on record by a girl at Pocklington School ! Sophie William has set a new First Form girls ’ long jump record of 4.61m , and Tabby Speight broke the First Form girls ’ 100m record , with a time of 13.44s . Congratulations to all !
