OP SPORT

Haywards Heath featured the individual performance of the week , with former 1st team captain Toby Williamson ( 10-23 ) making an excellent 119 not out . Alongside a typically quickfire 37 from Joe Moore ( 82-91 ), the Pixies found themselves in the driving seat at the halfway stage with 223 on the board . However , when Holmesdale found themselves 98-0 , and 178-2 , some tight bowling was required . Thanks to spells from Steve Burdett ( 8-1-35-1 ) and Josh Tanikal ( 8-0-35- 2 ), Haywards Heath would fall 11 runs short of their target , meaning back-to-back nail biters for the Pixies .
The Pixies made their first ever trip to Ansty CC on the Wednesday , and elected to bat first when they won the toss . Everyone chipped in with the bat , but it was captain Oliver Rook ’ s 60 not out off just 52 balls that made the headlines . Ansty made light work of the reply , with Max Barson ( 82 rtno ), and Charles Leclerc ( 73 *) brushing the Pixies aside .
The short trip to Hastings would bring up the final game of the tour , with the Pixies bowling first for the first time in the week . They would restrict Hastings to 166 all out , with Oliver Rook starring with the ball this time , bowling 8-2-22-4 . Despite a patient 29 from Freddie Taylor , and some late order resistance from Adam Iyer ( 23 *), the Pixies fell short of the target , being bowled out for 125 .
The Pixies have many people to thank for another successful tour : the committee , comprising of Marcus Townend ( 72-82 ), Charlie Lambert ( 01-08 ), and Matthew Atkinson ( 85-93 ), for organising the tour and all that goes into it , the OP Association for their continued support , ensuring that it is financially viable for the younger generation to come on the tour , and all the players who took part – having four current schoolboys and two recent leavers maintains the long-term future of the club . Final thanks go to Holmesdale , Eastbourne , Haywards Heath , Ansty and Hastings for hosting
Adam Iyer ’ s 100th Pixi wicket .
– the tour would not be possible without their commitment . Thank you all and see you next year !
GOLF AT GANTON 2023
The third playing of the Old Hymerians v Old Pocklingtonians golf match took place at Ganton GC on Wednesday 9 August . With the course about to host the R & A boys ’ & girls ’ amateur championships , playing conditions were certainly not easy ! The OP team consisted of Stephen St Quinton ( 64-74 ) ( captain ), Guy Littlejohn ( 00-07 ), Mark Addison ( 75-82 ), David Stephenson ( 77- 81 ), Richard Clough ( 84-91 ), Richard Brown ( 82-87 ), David Harrison ( 70-77 ), Tim Murden ( 83-90 ), Denton Guest ( 69-74 ) and Trevor Loten ( 70-80 ).
From the five pairs betterball matches , there were OP wins in matches 2 and 4 ( Brown & Murden and Addison & Clough ), followed by an agonising tie in the final match for Harrison & Loten , with a missed short putt on the 18th green proving costly ! So , a hugely enjoyable event ended in a draw for the second year in a row .
OP CRICKET 2023
Pocklington School 1st XI bounced back with impressive victory against a formidable OP XI at the annual Summer Reunion fixture on Sunday 2 July 2023 .
Against a formidable OP XI with many recent leavers , the school put on a disciplined performance with the ball . Henry Bayston ( 11-17 ) was once again the “ thorn ” in the side for the school XI and he had excellent support from Henry Kay ( 13-21 ) with a solid 64 not out . A very positive declaration from the OPs made for an excellent chase .
James Sweeting , in only his second appearance for the school ’ s 1st XI made a composed 25 and with Harvey Laverack continuing his fine form , they laid the foundation for captain Ollie Rook to put the final touches to it with a fine 85 .
