TENTH ANNUAL POCKLINGTONIAN GOLF DAY
The 2023 Pocklingtonian Golf Day held on Friday 9 June 2023 at The Oaks , marked the tenth running of the event and with the weather gods in full summer mode , it promised to be a blistering day in more ways than one for the eight teams of golfers playing for the President ’ s Cup .
As well as some of the regulars , there were several new players and teams taking part this year including : The Girls , an all-female team captained by former parent Janette Minns , Facets Commercial Consulting led by Guy Littlejohn ( 00-07 ), and The Lowther headed up by Tom Binns ( 07-18 ).
As always , the greens and fairways were in excellent condition , further enhanced by the weather , as players enjoyed their rounds in glorious sunshine . In addition to the team competition , individual players had the opportunity to try their luck against the Club Champion , Harry Lee , in the ‘ Beat the Champ ’ competition on the 7th hole as well as having a go at Nearest the pin , Nearest the pin in two and the Longest drive as they made their way around the course .
After the rounds , the teams gathered for supper and the prize presentations hosted by OP President , Joan Gough ( 75-77 ). This year , there was a special prize for most co-ordinated team which was presented to The Girls with their navy blue and pink themed golfing outfits .
In the team competition , although there was a tie on 83 for second place with The Glimmering Golfers edging it on countback over last year ’ s winners , Warrendale Farm , the overall winners were Facets Commercial Consulting with a runaway score of 90 on their debut . Congratulations !

Edmund-Loten Inspire Trophy 2023 – it ’ s in the name
All the players deserve a “ thank you ” for battling hard in very difficult conditions , caused by the strong and gusty wind !
Both groups of four pairs had a clear winner , but the runner-up positions were incredibly close ; in group A , Ed Sweeting ( 84-94 ) & Rachel Clark ( née Sweeting , 91-96 ) edged out Mohamed Gamal & Annie Marr by one game , whilst in group B James Sweeting ( 81-88 ) & Zoe Wakeham tied with Jonathan Longthorp & Sally Farnsworth but went through by virtue of their head-to-head victory .
In the semi-finals , group B winners Trevor ( 70-80 ) & Emma Loten ( 01-14 ) defeated Ed & Rachel , whilst group A winners Tom Sowersby ( 05-12 ) & Frankie Marsh ( 06-13 ) recovered from 2-0 down to defeat James & Zoe . As conditions became even more difficult , Trevor & Emma eventually won an entertaining final , 6-1 , to claim the Edmund-Loten Inspire trophy .
The pairs were : Rachel Clark ( née Sweeting ) & Ed Sweeting , Emma Loten & Trevor Loten , Francesca Marsh & Tom Sowersby , Katie Dewhirst & Joe Dewhirst , Sally Farnsworth & Jonathon Longthorp , Emma Stewart ( 16-19 ) & Ed Dare ( 11- 18 ), Zoe Wakeham & James Sweeting , Annie Marr & Mohamed Gamal .
Next year ’ s tournament will be on Sunday 23 June 2024 .
