What is it about?
Around the world, about one billion people with disabilities have to deal with physical, social and economic problems that exclude them from participating fully and effectively as equal members of society. These people also lack equal access to basic things such as education, employment, healthcare and social and legal support systems. Even though this situation exists, disability has remained invisible to people. In many parts of the world today, lack of awareness to these problems is very strong and leaves a lot of unsolved problems for different types of disabled people.
This special day provides an opportunity to promote awareness and opens the door to all these people that think that disabled people have the same rights. Promoting awareness might
bring to finding a solution to this problem, which isn't as farfetched as it seems.
On this special day, it is often displayed and taught in schools and other places such as scouts and even in small community centers, that today is the day for the disabled, that they should get equal rights and shouldn't be discriminated against for their difference in between the walls of society.
In Israel, disabled people are given a big importance. Did you notice that the little buttons on the pedestrian traffic lights make sounds? They are used to signal blind people whether the light is red or green.
Did you also know that the little bumps on the sidewalk in front of crosswalks are used to show blind pedestrians where the street or other hazardous drop off begins? There are also many people that volunteer to help disabled people.
