This year, we are trying something new for our summer gathering: we are taking a hiatus from the hot-yet-rewarding work of BBQ’ing, and are concentrating on all things apricot! We are thrilled to have apricot aficionado Lisa Prince Newman as our special guest. You’ll be able to sample treats from her popular cookbook, while learning more about our agricultural heritage. If you’re a fan of our beloved local stone fruit, you won’t want to miss this event. I recently spent some time in the orchard myself—last month, I gathered with like-minded fruit fans to pick peaches and nectarines in the San Joaquin Valley. (We do this as part of an “adopt-a-tree” program, where we buy into a share of the orchard and get to harvest our assigned trees.) We saw up- close how unpredictable the harvest can be. A stretch of triple- digit temperatures had actually slowed down the ripening process—somewhat confusingly—to us city folks. And all the trees were different— one tree might be full of ripe fruit, while its neighbor was still holding onto fruit that was tinged with green. Our nectarine tree, which gave us an abundance of ripe fruit three years ago, was less generous this year. That’s just how nature works, and not everyone realizes it. What do I do with all the fruit I pick? Hint: you’ll get a taste if you come to our summer event. See you at the Adobe— Candace Email: [email protected] Voicemail: (650) 903-6890 2
