caMPus News “From Far and Wide”: chamBer choir travels to germanY By Dr. Melanie Turgeon, Associate Professor and Choral Conductor, Music O n May 1, 2011, The King’s University College Chamber Choir became the first King’s musical group to depart on an international tour. Given the enormous success of the trip, this will hopefully be the start of occasional international Choir Tours. This year’s outstanding Chamber Choir of 21 singers, plus three Music Faculty, and Melanie Turgeon’s family, toured Germany from May 1 – 15. The choir was delighted and honoured to perform in seven different churches throughout Germany. They were so pleased by how well attended their concerts were, and particularly how very appreciative their audiences were. Every single concert was received with enormous applause at the conclusion, which prompted many encores. At times it felt as though we were given a glimpse of heaven; namely to sing in such amazing churches with glorious acoustics, and to have the choir and instrumentalists perform at such a high level seemed ethereal. A second major success of this two-week tour was the opportunity for King’s students to be billeted for approximately half of the trip. Being billeted was the means to experiencing Germany in a very authentic and unbelievably hospitable way. The choir also enjoyed very authentic German cuisine. There was definitely no shortage of various meats at our dinners! The two-week tour also included a significant amount of historic sightseeing. The list of highlights could go on forever; however, I am confident that the entire group will agree that the following five were particularly memorable: visiting Dachau Concentration Camp; spending a day in Strasbourg, France, and visiting its exceptional Gothic Cathedral; Berlin city tour, which included seeing remnants of the Berlin Wall and the famous Checkpoint Charlie; the town of Eisenach where J.S. Bach and Martin Luther resided; and visiting the beautiful cities of Leipzig and Munich. Overall, it was an unforgettable two weeks of exceptional performances. The Choir experienced wonderful, local hospitality, enjoyed each other’s friendship, and represented King’s with great honour. Let us Give Thanks to God the Father for this glorious opportunity! ?
