with basketball, but also emotionally for Lauren, assuring her to trust the process,” her mother, Maria, said.
With the Crofton Falcons coaching team’ s encouragement, Lauren received three offers to play basketball at universities in Canada before ultimately deciding to focus on business at UBC.
Beyond CHS, Lauren began an initiative, Together We Ball, fueled by her passion for community service— a part of her that grew during her time at the School thanks to programs like Ivy Compass, and the citizenship and agency encouraged across campus.
Together We Ball provides free, dropin basketball to foster community for immigrants in East Vancouver; the program sees up to 25 participants attending each session, all led by Lauren and her family. At a larger fall event in the summer, over 70 people attended.
“ Lauren has spent so many hours working on Together We Ball— getting the sponsors, raising money, getting gift cards for all the kids,” Maria said.“ Her hard work isn’ t just inspired by the classes she took, but the example she saw from Crofton House— the importance of community.”
“ Honestly, if I went to a different school, I don’ t know if I would have the confidence or the initiative to do something with that. It’ s being surrounded by people who have done such amazing things. I seriously look up to CHS students, even if they’ re younger than me,” Lauren said.“ I’ m really glad I started the program because I’ ve seen it make a difference in people’ s lives.”
Importantly, Crofton House immediately felt welcoming to Lauren.“ She never felt like she was coming from another school,” Maria said.“ The girls were excellent, so nice and welcoming.
That sense of belonging extends to the whole Chow family, who enjoy spending time on campus at events like the campus BBQs. Maria and her husband Ken have also been avid volunteers at the School, from staffing booths at the Winter Bazaar to hanging up Christmas lights on campus!
As Lauren heads to UBC this fall, she brings with her a strong foundation built on academic growth, athletic passion, and a dedication to service.“ We’ re very proud that she was consistent in maintaining her Honours Standing through the year,” Maria said.
Lauren’ s commitment to community was recently recognized with a 2024 – 2025 Molten Scholarship from BC School Sports, an award that honours graduating student-athletes who exemplify sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and community engagement.
Her breadth of experience and interests are a testament to the opportunities, mentorship and connections that Crofton House provides.
“ It was the best decision— the best opportunity— that our family has had,” Maria said.
