PAST and Present

MICHELLE DOUGLAS DIRECTOR , SENIOR SCHOOL
Dr Jessie Gordon ’ s founding vision for Crofton House School centred on empowering girls with the skills and knowledge to navigate life ’ s challenges . This vision continues today , and as we reflect on the remarkable milestone of 125 years , we recognize the pivotal role that educational institutions have played in unlocking the full potential of individuals and societies .
Over the past 125 years , girls ’ education has undergone a remarkable transformation , evolving from a marginalized endeavour to a powerful force of empowerment . In the late 19th century , access to education for girls was far from certain , with social norms limiting opportunities within education and in the professional world . However , Dr Gordon ’ s vision shone a light on the importance of empowering girls through education .
Throughout our history , Crofton House has remained deeply committed to this vision , encouraging girls to forge their own paths and embrace the inherent uncertainties of the future with resilience and determination . These ideas are central to our new strategic plan , Thriving in Possibility , and have fostered a strong sense of unity within our community , where we take great pride in upholding our core values of creativity , courage and citizenship .
Creativity lies at the heart of our community . We actively encourage our students to think beyond conventional boundaries , explore new ideas and engage in the application of deep learning . This emphasis on creativity in deep learning fosters the needed skills within innovative thought , inquiry-based processes and real-world applications . Through these skills , our students engage in a deeper understanding of concepts and develop the competencies needed to thrive in the complexities of the modern world .
Courage is another defining characteristic of our community . We believe in instilling a growth mindset in our students , empowering them to take risks , confront challenges and push beyond their comfort zones . Our students learn to overcome obstacles , develop resilience , and grow into confident and capable young adults , and , ultimately , cultivate agency — through which students exhibit greater motivation , engagement and perseverance in their educational journeys . Our CHS value of courage is a foundational element in fostering a learning environment that encourages student voice , choice and autonomy , equipping our students to take ownership of their learning processes and preparing them to face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead .
Moreover , Crofton House School places great importance on citizenship . We instill in our students a deep sense of responsibility towards their local and global communities . We encourage them to actively engage in social issues , champion causes close to their hearts and become agents of positive change . By fostering a spirit of active citizenship , we equip our students with the tools to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the world .
As we celebrate 125 years of Crofton House School , we recognize the past and honour Dr Gordon ’ s founding vision of empowering girls through education . Together , as a united community and guided by our core values of creativity , courage and citizenship , we eagerly embrace the future as we passionately work to ensure the continuation of the CHS legacy for the next 125 years !
Happy birthday , Crofton House !
