Did you know..........that Elton John's EMPTY GARDEN was written and composed by Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin, after the death of John Lennon in 1980.
John Lennon and Elton John were good friends and when Elton released the Beatles song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds in 1974, Lennon appeared on it .
Elton then appeared on Lennons song "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" . Lennon jokingly said that if the single made number one he would appear with Elton in concert , which it did!
On Thanksgiving Day, 1974, Lennon and John performed these two songs along with "I Saw Her Standing There" at Madison Square Gardens.
In 1975 Elton became godfather to Lennon's son Sean.
After the death of Lennon in 1980 John felt that a tribute song to him wouldn't do justice ...until he saw Taupins lyrics.
The Empty Garden titles refers to Lennons last live performance at Madison Square Gardens( with Elton in 1974).it is said the the line won't you come out to play is a reference to to Lennons song Dear Prudence.
The line "It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain "in my view is a reference to Lennon's killer ...
