Project Brief and Client The House The House Project - A council funded community project for the benefit of local young adults and small local businesses. The House The City Farm Grandma's House What? A place for young adults (16-30) to learn practical life-skills that are not taught in schools, and instead taught by local businesses who hold the relevant skills. What? A smallholding connected to the House, that involves young adults in the production of fruit and vegetables and care of small livestock. What? A cafe during the day and a restaurant serving traditional pub food in the evening, with plenty of outdoor seating. Why? • An increasingly impractical younger generation, as backed up by research and personal observations. •Young people without parent figures to teach them the necessary skills. •No replacement for the skills taught in home economics in secondary schools. •To give local businesses a chance to grow their profile within the city and the possibility of financial return if the project was successful. Why? • An extension of the Initial brief to make maximum use of the site. •Educate young adults on where their food comes from, garden maintenance and basic animal welfare. •Collaborate with The House kitchen, to transform produce into meals. •Involve young adults in the sale of produce at the city farm market, where other loca tradespeople and fishermen can also stand. Why? • Bringing the users of the house and city farm together with the community. • The House and City Farm are a place to learn physical, practical skills, so Grandma's House will be a place for downtime, socialising and reflection. • It is an informal setting where local business people from The House, may meet people in the community and start to generate ideas of future events and such, that could become part of The House Project.
