The SRP Chronology
1963 8 May - Founded as ' The Society for Radiological Protection , United Kingdom Section ' of the US Health Physics Society ; approved by the US Health Physics Society on 10 June . First meeting of Directors was held on 14 May . First newsletter was circulated to members on 26 July . First scientific meeting , entitled ' Biological Monitoring ', was held on 30 October .
1965 31 December - Renamed ' The Society for Radiological Protection ' and the formal connection with the US Health Physics Society was dissolved .
1966 The first International Symposium was held ( Bournemouth ). 1968 A constitution was adopted . The Regulations specified the grades of Member and Associate . 1969 The appointment of Honorary Members began . 1971 New Regulations included the grades of Students and Affiliates ( organisations ).
1972 SRP helped organise the 2nd Congress of the International Radiation Protection Association held in Brighton .
1973 The Society became a registered charity ( No . 264337 ). 1974 The second International Symposium was held ( Aviemore ). 1976 The 10th anniversary was celebrated at The Royal Naval College , Greenwich .
1978 The Founders ' Prize for , preferably younger , workers in radiological protection , was established . The Society Bursary scheme was established .
1979 The Society awarded the first Certificate of Professional Competence in Operational Health Physics . Membership passes 500 .
1981 The ' Journal of Radiological Protection ' was first published . Issues include Society news and the newsletter ceases to be a separate document .
1982 The third International Symposium was held ( Inverness ). 1984 The 21st anniversary was celebrated at the National Radiological Protection Board in Chilton .
1985 First assisted Government in the development and implementation of statutory regulations relating to radiation protection .
1987 The Long Term Planning Committee recommended the introduction of the post nominals MSRP for Members and development of the grade of Fellow ' as a necessary step towards chartered status for the Society '.
1988 The 25th anniversary was celebrated at the Institute of Naval Medicine in Alverstoke . Creation of membership grade of Fellow . Contract signed with Institute of Physics Publishing regarding JRP .
1989 The fourth International Symposium was held ( Malvern ). The term Honorary Member was changed to Honorary Fellow .
1992 Membership passes 1000 .
1993 A professional administrator was engaged ( contract signed 10 June ). The first awards of the Society ' s scholarship scheme covering full course fees were made .
1994 The fifth International Symposium was held ( Portsmouth ). It was designated an IRPA Regional Congress , with attendance of the IRPA Executive Council , and organised with the Netherlands society . Qualifications & Professional Standards Committee established . Finance Committee established to provide assistance to the Honorary Treasurer .
1996 Developed the first National Vocational Qualifications standards in radiation protection , accredited by the National Council for Vocational Qualifications on 7 April 1997 . The Society reintroduced its Newsletter .
