Introduction
The History of the Society has been prepared in three parts :
Part 1 ( 1963-1988 ) This was a booklet written and produced by Professor Jack Martin . He served as SRP President 1974 / 75 , was appointed Honorary Fellow in 1989 and was the Secretary of the Programme Committee for almost twenty-five years . He begins the story with the memorable paragraph ' Groucho Marx once said that he would not join any club that would admit him as a member ! No such problem seems to have faced those joining SRP for the Society has grown from a foundation membership of 66 in 1963 to a number approaching 800 twenty-five years later .’
Part 2 ( 1988-2013 ) This was produced to mark SRP ' s 50th anniversary . It was co-ordinated by Geoff Webb who served as SRP President 1991 / 92 , was appointed Honorary Fellow in 1997 and was President of IRPA 2000-2004 . Geoff writes in the Acknowledgements ' When I agreed to take on the task of co-ordinating the preparation of this history , I made it clear that it was not a ' one-man job ' and that I would need a great deal of help from a large number of people . As is usual with SRP , this help was readily forthcoming and people contributed drafts covering the areas they had been responsible for or associated with – needing only the modicum of prodding .' This printed publication is available on request and includes Part 1 .
Part 3 ( 2013-2023 ) This is the document you are reading now . It has been collated by John Jackson and Tessa Harris . It includes updates to the Annexes , a chronology of key moments in SRP ' s history and a personal recollection of the Foundation Meeting from Bernard James . It has been a decade of great activity for the Society with many new initiatives but never any shortage of enthusiasm . SRP ' s vision is ' to be recognised as the independent professional lead for the development and dissemination of radiation protection science , culture and practice for all .' It promises to continue being a busy time !
