HAMMONTON — Hammonton Middle School Eighth grade Enrichment students presented their own family histories to the Historical Society of Hammonton ( HSH ) on Sunday , May 22 .
The Historical Society of Hammonton held an open house at the museum , along with Hammonton Middle School Social studies teacher Jason Massara , to teach the students the importance of knowing from where they came and to where they may go . The past antiques of the town covered every shelf and wall of the museum with historical artifacts of another time Hammonton once knew and loved .
From old photos of town leaders to petitions signed with quill pens , the museum held significant pieces of time .
“ We want them to know about their family history . This is just the beginning , because what ’ s happening today is tomorrow ’ s history ,” HSH President Anne De- Cicco said .
She and society secretary Denise Saia plan on connecting to more schools and students with this opportunity of learning family history and more about the town through the museum .
The students gathered at the museum to present their binders that held their family trees , along with photos and birth certificates to show their origins and ethnicity . Four of the students , Ashley Westfall , Julia Sulzner , Alex Giordano and Sam Donio , received certificates for the best family tree projects and excellence . Not only did the students learn about their ancestors , but they also learned about the history of the community .
“ I learned a lot from this . I was able to search back to my family ’ s immigration into the U . S . There were so many other people in the Donio family in this town that I didn ’ t know about ,” student Sam Donio said .
Massara encouraged his students to do this project for the pure knowledge of history and family ancestry . The Family Tree binder was not required for a school grade or even extra credit , but simply a way to excite students about knowing the past and how that affects their future . The students were enthusiastic about the assignment and worked hard among the other schoolwork to complete it .
“ I saw the enthusiasm and the passion that they had . To have 15 or 16 of my students want to dig deep into their family history … it was really special . I think it ’ s important for the town as a whole as we celebrate the 150th anniversary ,” Massara said .
Parents and grandparents of the students attended the event to see how they , too , were represented in the family tree projects .
The students followed the mantra of the Historical Society of Hammonton by “ remembering the past , embracing the future ” in the presentation of their family trees . The Family Tree projects will remain at the museum for the public
