There are also a number of salons located throughout the town . Why do so many people decide to try their hand at doing and selling hair and makeup products ?
Rita Pavesi has been working in the hairdressing industry for 56 years . After working in a factory for a number of years , she began her career through an uncle who owned a barber shop . Years later , she opened her own shop , which she still runs today .
“ I love what I do . It is never about the money for me . I do it for the people because I love them ,” Pavesi said .
Working in the same field for so long has given Pavesi the opportunity to recognize changes throughout the years .
“ I always go into the new shops that open up in Hammonton to wish the owners good luck . They are beautiful places inside . When I first started , we had to wear uniforms every day . Now it ’ s not like that … I think it is great for Hammonton that so many new shops keep opening , and I support all of them . The girls just need to know that it can be hard work ,” Pavesi said .
In the same light as Pavesi , Gloria Ingemi has also been working as a hairdresser for more than 50 years . After graduating high school in 1959 , Ingemi attended the Wilford Academy of Hair and Beauty Culture in Philadelphia , which has since closed .
“ As a child , I liked to fool around with doll hairs . It ’ s a great industry to get into . You get so close to these people , and they become like you ’ re family . It ’ s so hard to get out of this profession . They ’ re people you see every week . I love interacting with people and changing somebody around . People come in when they ’ re in a bad mood and I bring them into a good mood ,” Ingemi said .
“ I think so many people get into the industry because of the money . You can really do well . The younger girls today are a lot different than we were . They don ’ t come

in every week like people always did . When I was starting out , we didn ’ t have curling irons , just rollers . There are a lot of things that are different ,” Ingemi said .
Leslie Roberson is the owner of JNR Beauty Supply , which is located on Central Avenue . She decided to open her store in Hammonton after many years of traveling to Vineland for the same supplies she now sells in town . During the 1980s , Roberson worked as a runway model in New York City and Philadelphia , so she has plenty of experience in the field . JNR carries nail polish , hair products and nearly every type of beauty product imaginable .
“ If we don ’ t have it , I ’ ll try to get it . Why make people go all the way to Williamstown or Mays Landing or Vineland when we could have the same thing right here in Hammonton ? I already do everything else right here . It made sense to open the store ,” Roberson said .
Alyssa Mascioli , owner of Infinity Salon and Boutique on the White Horse Pike , started in the industry six years ago .
“ I tried the whole college thing for a year and realized I wanted to work with people . I always liked doing more hands-on work and wanted to build relationships and friendships with people and not really feel like I ’ m ever working ,” Mascioli said .
Her salon currently employs 13 stylists , making it one of the largest of its kind in Hammonton . She has been able to develop her clientele through word of mouth , both in and out of town .
“ I think so many people get into it because it ’ s very competitive . A lot of the people who come to our salon aren ’ t actually from town . I have four stylists working here who aren ’ t from town at all , which is important . I ’ m very proud that I ’ m able to keep a salon going that has 13 stylists ,” Mascioli said .
Jana Sliwecki is the owner of Rejuvenation Day Spa . Although she doesn ’ t provide hair or makeup services , the full service spa offers massages , facials , waxes and much more .
“ I believe people are more educated in self-care and look to license experts in the field to facilitate their goals . We specialize in progressive skin and body care . Massages and facials are one way to take total wellness to another level … It ’ s a passion of mine , and I absolutely love what I do . We are very fortunate to have local , loyal clients who support and believe in our mission ,” Sliwecki said .
Similar to Sliwecki , Colleen Mortellite also specializes in a different field in the beauty industry . She owns and operates Berry Tan Girls , a full-service spray tan cen-
